The Sydney Cricket Ground has been announced as host
of the Australia v New Zealand Centenary Test to be played on Friday 9th May,
2008.
It will be the first time since 1986 that a Rugby League Test match will be
played at the hallowed turf and the first time since 1987 that a major
representative Rugby League match will be at the venue.
The SCG was part of Rugby League tradition and folklore from 1909 to 1987 before
the all-purpose built Sydney Football Stadium was ready for use. The big Sydney
Premiership clashes, all the Grand Final's, Interstate matches and the majority
of Test matches was played at the SCG and the most memorable memories at in our
game come from the deeds of many players on the hallowed SCG turf.
Both sides will mark the occasion by wearing 1968 replica jerseys.
The Test will mark the centenary of Test matches between Australia and New
Zealand. Australia played their first Test against New Zealand in 1908 and
there's been 100 years of battles between the two nations. New Zealand later
this year will be embarking on 100 years of battles against Great Britain, which
will include the famous All Golds clash with Australian prop Steve Price and
great Australian coach Wayne Bennett the two Australian guests as a tribute to
Dally Messenger being guest for the New Zealand side in 1907.
Australia's last Test match at the SCG was in 1986 when they defeated New
Zealand 29-12 in a spirited and competitive match with two late tries blowing
out the scoreline.
The Australian squad that day was: Garry Jack (Balmain), Michael O'Connor (St
George), Brett Kenny (Parramatta), Gene Miles (Wynnum), Les Kiss (North Sydney),
Wally Lewis (c) (Wynnum), Peter Sterling (Parramatta), Steve Roach (Balmain),
Royce Simmons (Penrith), Peter Tunks (Canterbury), Noel Cleal (Manly), Steve
Folkes (Canterbury), Wayne Pearce (Balmain). Subs: Terry Lamb (Canterbury) - Not
Used, Bryan Neibling (Redcliffe) - rep Tunks. Coach: Don Furner (Canberra).
With the Test to be staged at Sydney's most famous and traditional sporting
venue and also being the occasion to celebrate 100 years of Trans Tasman battles
a big crowd is expected and hopefully 50,000 fans will be in attendance with the
SCG capacity expanded due to the Hill and Doug Walters areas being redeveloped.
