Rugby League 2000 and Beyond
In 2000 the NRL reduced the number of teams to 14 !


On October 15 1999, the 2000 teams were finalised. The deadline for clubs to commit to a joint venture was July 31, 1999.

2000 Competition

Newcastle has a five year licence in the NRL
(until end 2003 season)
Reason : Newcastle is classed as strategic location in Australian Rugby League

Brisbane has a five year licence in the NRL
(until end 2003 season)
Reason : Brisbane is classed as strategic location in Australian Rugby League

Auckland has a five year licence in the NRL
(until end 2003 season)
Reason : Auckland is classed as strategic location in Australian Rugby League

St.George-Illawarra has a five year licence in the NRL
(until end 2003 season)
Reason : Merger

Wests Tigers has a five year licence in the NRL
(until end 2003 season)
Reason : formed Joint Venture before July 31, 1999
